Can a zebra change its stripes?

This is really odd. I think my zebra which I have had for a few years now has changed its stripes. I think its the male and I usually don't see him much except lately he's decided to sit on the front side of the ledge, thinking I can't see him. Sprung! I got the camera out.



This is what he looked like a few years ago.
I called him Y tail cause he used to have a Y on his tail.

i've seen zebs before that have changed, normally after a bit of damage, after fighting/ breeding etc where the skin has been damaged and the pattern has come back slightly different.
i see no reason why they couldn't simply change on their own either, a lot of plecs look totally different between juvi stage and adulthood.

Naturally when its has changed its stripes it will become some obscure L number and every one will rant on about it being a hybrid.
