Appearance: Typical large bulky Royal Panaque, with a dark brown to black base and golden/ light brown stripes. When young, they show a the typical clear section on their tails

Compatibility: Can become territorial when they become mature, and can show aggression towards similarly sized bottom dwellers but they are generally peaceful to all tankmates, at smaller sizes they can be very shy and seldom seen

Sexing and Breeding: Males will grow huge interopercular odontodes (chew chew) when mature and in breeding condition.

Diet: Like all panaques, they are wood eaters, ideally, a few types of soft wood should be used to decorate their tanks, diet should be supplemented with a variety of other foods, especially fresh veg. Favourites seem to be food such as sweet potato, courgette etc and they will favour the tough skin instead of the flesh. Meat proteins should only be fed very occasionally if at all, it is believed that panaque find too much protein hard to digest, and can lead to digestive problems such as bloat.

Water parameters: as with other species from the Tapajos, the water should be kept clean and well oxygenated, hi current doesn't seem to be needed to keep L027 in top condition but overfiltration is always recommended due to the vast amounts of waste they can create

Max Size: around 16"

Bred by: unreported

Additional Comments:
These fish can grow to huge sizes and will create vast amounts of waste so not suitable for small or overstocked aquaria.

Panaque nigrolineatus forms a group of similar-looking fish found throughout tropical South America. Regional differences are caused by variations in habitat, diet and water chemistry. The L190 is possibly the same as the true Panaque nigrolineatus, but because it is found in a different region, scientific research needs to verify this.
The P. nigrolineatus complex consists of the following members:
• Panaque nigrolineatus (from the Rio Portuguesa, Venezuela) • L027 (found in the Rio Xingú, Rio Tapajós, Rio Jamanxim, Rio Tocantins, Rio Lageado, Rio Maranhão, Brazil) • L090 or Papa Panaque (found in the Rio Ucayali, Rio Madre Dos Dios, Peru) • L190 (from the Rio Orinoco drainage and the Llanos, Colombia, Venezuela) • L191 or Dull-eyed Royal Pleco (from the Rio Caguán, Colombia) • L203 (found in the Rio Ucayali, Peru) • L330 or Watermelon Pleco (from the Rio Guejar, Colombia)
