G'day Jason, I have been planting in terracotta pots for the last 10-15 years. Buy them new from a nursery and give them a few days soaking as a safety measure I also add in some prime and melafix, just for stamps.

When folks tell me they have L cats with African cichlids, I just remind them that they could live in a port-a-loo, but they would not be happy. Capisce?

Other than the tropica and tetra, etc, stuff from lfs what other soil/substrate can I use in the pots?
I've seen that a potting compost can be used.
And is there a way of putting pots filled with the soil in aquarium without emptying loads of the water and fish?

I just put it in with no fuss. 2/3 dirt, sand cap, and gravel on top in each pot. Anything organic should do nicely. Keep away from chemicals.
