I have a Canon EF 100mm 1: 2.8 USM. Not cheap but best I could get without going into thousands of dollars. Mine cost $800 about 3 years ago.

Thx brengun. Evidently from the preliminary research ive done thats one of the best value canon lenses full stop. Which means it must be fab coz it isn't cheap as you say. They are about 950 now... but you've posted some great shots. Is there anything you don't like about the lens?

Manual adjusting seems to be the way to go as the auto never wants to work properly in close macro. Unfortunately sometimes my eyes arent as good as they used to be and I still get blurry shots lol.

Go for that 100/2.8. I borrowed it from my friend some time ago to do some outdoors tests and it was simply stunning. If you gonna use it only for fish/home purposes, try to find a second hand one. It will surely do the job!

Tamron SP AF DI 90mm f/2.8 Macro

cheap and good
doubles up as a portrait lens with decent bokeh
(one of the "bang for bucks" tamron lens)

okie the above is for 1 lens
however, like Brengun mentioned, AF doesnt really work fast enough or accurately during close 1:1 range (and fish might be moving in and out)
Hence you might like to try a munual focus "reverse mount 50mmf1.8 method"
or you might like to try a manual focus "reverse mount 50mmf1.8 on a 50mmf1.8method" <--- personal favourite

good reverse mount techniques here

I bought a really cheap one from amazon made by Neweer for my 550D. It was about 10 and amazing for the money! It has a macro and wide angle lens, both are pretty decent.
