I bought some L201's a couple of months ago.
After some internet research, I'm a bit confused.
These's plenty of contradictory info. out there.

It seems there's big spot & small spot 201's.
Someone else was listing L201 & L201a !
Then there's Hypan inspector & Hypan contradens
just to confuse things a bit more.

So who can tell me what's actually
going on with these bad boys ???

if people are listing 2 types of 201's, i'd guess they had contradens and 201's, contradens having the big spots and 201 having the smaller, taken from Planetcafish about the contradens:
"Most easily confused with L201 which is flatter, more finely spotted and is more slender and less high bodied than Hypancistrus contradens which also grows about 2cm longer"

L102, hypan inspector is also very similar so could easily be confused in an LFS

most LFS advertise them all as L201.

L201 are a much smaller fish and have smaller spots, H.Contradens have larger bright orange spots and get bigger and much chunkier

hypan inspector is L102
you can tell the difference easy 102s have black edging to the tail and dorsal fin and grow over 6 inches long

All the below are different species.

Hypancistrus inspector is 102 and can be named snowball pleco. 20cm

Hypancistrus contradens or ventuari pleco. 12-13cm

and

Hypancistrus sp. L201 / 201 varies the most out of all 3 spp. 8-10cm

As you can see size differs in all of the above, including shape
These are 201

Sorry for budding in. So does this mean my small spot and big spot Lda31 are different.

Cheers
Aiden
If Panaque albomaculatus (LDA-31) is what you have than we're talking about entirely different fish and what holds true for the Hypans isn't necessarily true for the Panaque. There seems to be some variability in the spot sizes of P. albomaculatus.
