Ancistrus what is this?

Unfortunately there are a lot of Ancistrus species with a black back-ground colour and small white spots. Without a collection location it is almost impossible to tell which species it is.

The Xingu has L100, Tapajos L213 etc.

Sadly, you're going to hear this question quite a bit on all catfish forums. The problem is there are only a couple white spotted bristlenose that can easily be identified, and there seems to be one in about every river in South America. Both fry and adults of most of them look very similar with only minor exceptions.

Because of this, most hobbyists, won't respond to the thread out of fear of being wrong. They'll look in hopes of being able to help, but unless it's one of the obvious species that's as far as it gets.

Needless to say, this isn't one of the obvious ones. Even with export/collection information it would be difficult to do anything more than make a guess with a very low probability of being correct.

This is one of the problems faced daily with nearly all genera of Loricariidae.
