I used to use fine silica sand, available from the Swimmimg pool shop. Give it a good rinse. If you wish to breed, then invest in a breeding mop, as they will lay eggs on this and then you can remove this mop inot a fry saver. I would use 3ft tanks , but that is just my view. In the filter intake, put foam over it so the little ones do not get sucked into the filter.
What type are you looking at getting and breeding ?

you will need to keep them in seperate tanks, as some species can interbreed. Sponges are fine, I used to have Eheim cannister filters doing the work. cheers and good luck. Post us with updates on what you are breeding and your successes. cheers jk

I'm not actively breeding corys anymore, although I get baby panda corys 'appearing' regularly.

If I was getting back into it again I'd go for 2ft tanks or 30" plus for the longnose types, a shallow layer of sand, broad leaf plants and java moss. Depends on the species you go for regarding their preference of egg laying sites. I had some Simulatus that loved their spawning mop but most of the other species I spawned preffered the plants or the glass. Sponge filters are ideal, cheap, easy to maintain and don't suck up tiny cory fry.
