It depends on depth of the tank and what you are trying to run. I find sponge filters need 1-2 litres a minute approx.

Its probably just coloured yelow from food or waste. I've seen it grow on new silicon airlines and tanks. Its called diatoms. A harmless algae forming on new tanks

aussie hardwoods are safe if they are very old / dead wood. The resin dries up and is safe. Its all I use and I have 50 + pieces.
